Giving Thanks: Spreading Thanks in the Workplace (and Why it's Important)

Tis the season for giving, right? Thanksgiving week is finally here, folks! And let me tell you, we couldn’t be more excited. Thanksgiving is one of our favorite holidays for a couple of reasons – the first one being - well, food and another being that we believe that giving thanks in the workplace is really important. So, what better time to talk about giving thanks? A happy workplace is made up of employees who feel appreciated. And we have to say, giving back and letting others know that you are thankful for them is a recipe for good vibes all on its own. Let’s talk about some ways to spread thanks in the workplace this week (and all the weeks to follow).

A Simple Thank You Goes a Long Way

When was the last time that you thanked your boss or one of your coworkers for all that they do? Are you having to think a little bit too hard to remember? Well, there is no time like the present! Simply letting your coworkers know that you appreciate them can really go a long way in promoting a positive workplace – which is like a domino effect to improving productivity.

·         Encourage everyone to thank a coworker by putting it in writing and turning it in to a designated place in the office – hold a meeting to share everyone’s ‘thanks’ or put them on display. What better way to boost office morale?

Giving is Contagious

Is there something that you do every year around the holidays to give back to the community? Sharing your ideas with your coworkers will likely spark their interest to give back as well. A giving spirit is contagious and the more people who catch it, the better it is for the community. Who knows, you may inspire a charitable project for the entire workplace to get involved in during the holiday season. Need some good ideas?

·         Sponsor a family in need during the holidays to supply them with food and gifts for the kids.

·         Take a break from the mundane office tasks and dedicate a day during the holidays to volunteer at a local charity or non-profit organization as a group.

·         Find a ‘Toys 4 Tots’ type program that everyone can participate in and recognize the employee with the most creative donation.

Coordinate a Holiday Potluck Lunch at the Office

What could be better than gathering with all of your coworkers over bounds of delicious food and enjoying a much needed, exceptionally satisfying lunch break? I mean, why can’t we just do that every day, right? This is also a great way to discover who the great cooks are in the group, so that you can guilt them into bringing food to the office more often throughout the year. Giving thanks in the form of good food is always welcome this time of year!

A Giving Heart is Always Full

Whether you are giving thanks to a coworker or giving back to your community, you can’t go wrong with exercising the giving spirit. This is the time of year to invite that giving spirit into your workplace and witness the morale boost for yourselves. Chances are that giving spirit will become a more permanent staple in your workplace for the entire year – not just during the holiday season.

“Thanksgiving Day comes, by statute, once a year; to the honest man it comes as frequently as the heart of gratitude will allow.” Edward Sandford Marti
