A New Chapter in the Story

Even years ago, I was sketching logos during a staff meeting, starting a silent countdown in my head to the moment I would start a conversation with my then-boss with the words, "there's really no good time to say this, but..."

Opportunities rarely present themselves unless you're truly ready, which I absolutely was not. One day, I just went for it. I designed a logo, created a website, and gave notice at my job. I come from a family of business owners, so I knew the DNA was there (even if the MBA wasn't) so I took the leap and filed the DBA: Simply Content Marketing.

What a horrible business name, right? Seriously, the worst. But I was so anxious to begin. And then someone wiser than me told me: choose a name that can grow and change with you as your life grows and changes. Two months after filing, I refiled, as The Storyteller Agency.

I started as a marketing company, focused on helping brands transition to storytelling with their marketing outreach, and after five years of doing the high-heel hustle, building a clientele and growing the business into something profitable, I started to feel the need for transition. Yes, there were opportunities to work on kickass projects with amazing brands and meaningful nonprofits, and about 5% of the time, I felt truly creative and immersed in what I was creating.

But for the most part, on the daily, what the company was doing was marketing, going against everything I had said I wouldn't do, delivering quality content but still feeling like sometimes I was contributing to the sludge of social media and digital marketing. Even my own marketing and branding wasn't telling a story, or if it was, it was telling a very annoyingly cheerful, 'PR-spun' side of things. It all felt tired.

Even the logo felt tired.

I felt tired looking at the logo.

And then, a change.

My first son Wilder was born in 2018, and of course my attention shifted. I had good people onboard with Storyteller, and I was able to do (*see also 'try to do') the true work-and-mom-from-home thing, working with a force of remote writers, editors, and designers, and when Beckett was born 18 months later, everything changed again. I started planning for the new Storyteller Agency, the one that could combine my work love with my true loves: my family.

This year, as we approach our seventh year (and maybe it’s the seven-year itch?), the Storyteller Agency relaunches, as something new, a collection of work-from-home writers offering writing services as well as a lifestyle blog and hopeful community of like-minded and like-living individuals. We are writers and editors, but we are also members of our families and lovers of living on our own time and schedules as much as we can. Those visiting our website will find a common thread and a familiar voice, one that's authentic and meaningful. One that offers wisdom and humor, and one that tells a good story. The Storyteller Agency will now exist as an agency that offers meaningful written content, as well as a resource for work-from-home writers.

A new logo, a new direction for the company, a new chapter in the story.
