Fall – or at least the occasional hint of it - is in the air during October, which makes it that much lovelier to get outside on Santa Rosa Beach. While you probably don’t need a good reason for hitting the outdoors (those pumpkin spice lattes aren’t going to drink themselves), many of our area’s local organizations are hosting fun events that help others while getting you into the spirit of sweater season.
Nothing “Corny” about Helping Children in Crisis
Summer might be over, but that’s no reason not to participate in the Destin Charity Corn Hole Tournament for Emerald Coast Children’s Advocacy Center on October 1 starting at 12:30 p.m. Enjoy bottomless craft beer, mimosas, Bloody Marys, Belgian pretzels, wings, and corn dogs while corn holing for the grand prize.
Make Your Month’s First Monday Meals Count
From you’re a.m. coffee to lunch to dinner, the Bistro at the Courtyard by Marriott Sandestin at Grand Boulevard donates 10% of the day’s proceeds to Food for Thought every first Monday of every month. This month’s day to dine is October 2.
Brunch for the Benefit of Others
Slip over to Grayton Beach’s Hibiscus Café on October 8 for Brunch in the Backyard of Love benefiting the Children’s Volunteer Health Network, Inc. The event will run from 10 a.m. to 1 a.m. on October 9 (so no worries if “brunch” actually means “midnight snack” in your book).
Tee Off for Charity
On October 9 & 10, head to Destin’s Kelly Plantation Golf Club for the Annual Sugar Sands Charity Golf Classic for Children in Crisis. The event will include a pre-registration party at Tommy Bahama Restaurant, lunch at Kelly Plantation, prizes and an awards dinner.
Make Merry While Helping Children
On October 12, plan a short road trip to Pensacola for the 4th Annual Let Your Light Shine for Children in Crisis event from 6 p.m. to 8:30 p.m. The event will include a silent and live auction, music and dancing, wine and beer, and heavy hor d’oeuvres. Best of all, its proceeds will help children.
Hustle for a Sweet Cause
Put on your best swagger for AJ’s Oyster Shanty second annual .5K Donut Dash on October 14. The half-kilometer hustle serves to benefit the Emerald Coast Autism Center. After the walk (sprint?), enjoy the after party and live music by Austin Jennings.
Sip to Support Homeless Families
Raise a Glass for Opportunity Place on October 29 at Magnolia Grill from 2-4 p.m. Enjoy wine and cheese and a silent auction as you raise funds to benefit homeless women and families in South Walton.
Plan a Fundraiser for the Future
Own a local business? Start planning a fundraiser to benefit Youth Center this October. Youth Village provides educational and recreational resource for children grades K-8 in Fort Walton Beach.
Get Fit Handing Out Fliers
October is Domestic Violence Awareness Month. Volunteer to hand out brochures and flyers, to pick up donations, to collect cell phones in the community, or to work events and fundraisers at Shelter House. Shelter House provides support of victims of domestic violence and sexual assault.
Share Your Talents to Make a Change
Pathways for Change needs volunteers to mentor, tutor, assist with childcare, instruct, provide IT services, to garden the Family Center, or to help in other ways. Pathways for Change helps children and families turn away from destructive life habits and toward a more purposeful path to lifelong success.
The Storyteller Agency is committed to making the story of those who live in South Walton Beach a better one, and we encourage you to join us in that effort. Not from South Walton Beach? No problem! Every community needs your help. Join us in our efforts to #dogoodthings.
